A sub-three-minute mile, though? That is scientifically and physiologically impossible. Roger Bannister - 3:59.4 Roger Bannister trained specifically to break the four-minute barrier in 1954 and used Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher as pacesetters.

Read More »Common wisdom and scientific knowledge perceived a sub-four-minute mile to be an insurmountable barrier until Sir Roger Bannister set a world record time of 3min 59.4sec in 1954. Since then, a new world record has been set 18 times, the current record of 3:43.13 being clocked in 1999. More than 30 seconds have been shaved off the fastest mile time in the past 100 years and human limits are constantly being pushed by hyper-elite athletes. So is it possible for a human to someday run a sub-three minute mile? To understand the limits of this race, we first have to look at the physiology involved in running the distance. The distance finds itself in a "neither here, nor there" category. It is too long for an all-out sprint, but too short to be run like a distance race. Where 400m and 800m runners can push themselves to the anaerobic threshold, milers have to monitor their oxygen uptake to ensure they have enough left for the last few hundred yards. On the other hand, 5,000m and 10,000m runners are able to settle into a "groove" where they can parcel out energy in closely calibrated doses; milers are pushing too hard to find themselves in a groove. Milers typically have large reserves of raw energy left at the end of a race, but are on the verge of fainting from lack of oxygen. This fatigue is caused by a high rate of anaerobic metabolism, which occurs when you run too fast for your heart to provide sufficient oxygen to your muscles. Exceeding your anaerobic metabolism causes a number of problems, including the inhibition of the release of calcium, which triggers muscle contraction, and the accumulation of other metabolites in muscles, which results in a decrease in force production and running speed.

Read More »When we applied the same model to mile runners, we calculated the world record should be down to 3:33.29 in 2028 and to 3:29.84 in 2040. Extrapolating to some unknown time in the future while staying within the present stage of human evolution, we found the absolute limit in the mile to be 3:18.87. This is an "upper limit" rather than a prediction; the absolute fastest that someone at the current state of our species could possibly run. Will the 3:18.87 mile time ever actually happen? We can't be sure. A sub-three-minute mile, though? That is scientifically and physiologically impossible.
