Can you publish a book with no money?

“Print-on-demand” is the no-cost evolution in self-publishing. An author can order their books from a print-on-demand publisher at printing cost.

Never Pay to Have Your Book Published

Paying someone to publish your book is like paying someone to open a bank account for you If you dream of seeing your name on a book, your enthusiasm could appeal to predatory publishers. Increasingly, companies are popping up to help authors publish. Many of these companies intentionally mislead potential authors who are unfamiliar with the book industry. If you are considering paying someone to publish your book, don’t! Here’s why.

Bang for Your Buck

With well over 600 million books printed, paying someone to publish your book is like paying someone to open up a bank account for you. Banks do not charge to open an account, so paying someone to do it is a waste of money because the account balance is still zero. You have to earn money to put into the account. Predatory publishers make the process of publishing seem much more complicated than it is. People who pay for their work to be published often do not know that the cost to self-publish is close to zero on self-publishing platforms. Predatory publishers don’t tell their clients that their book, likely, will sit dormant without profit to the author once it is published. Novice writers may not understand the humungous difference between publishing a book and selling it once it is in print. Predatory publishers don’t tell their clients that their book, likely, will sit dormant without profit to the author once it is published. I had already self-published three books when, out of curiosity, I inquired about getting help with publishing my fourth book. I received an estimate of $2,500 for approximately 200 pages. That cost included cover design, proofreading, obtaining an ISBN, and making sure the book would be accessible to all bookstores. I had done all of this before for far less. The reason the term “predatory” is fitting is that these publishers know that most authors will not earn back their investment in book sales. Authors who pay for publishing are highly likely to take a loss.

Publishing Real Costs

Book editing is the highest expense of the publishing process. Even a self-publisher should have their manuscript edited by someone semi-professional. The cost of line editing can be as little as $100. The lowest cost will not get you the best quality. However, predatory publishers do not guarantee the highest quality either. You don’t know the level of expertise a publisher will bring to your project. You are better off identifying the best editor you can afford for your project, which should be lower than $2,500.

ISBN

Obtaining an ISBN for your book is required. Some self-publishing platforms will include it for you for free. You can also purchase a series of them at a reasonable cost, which is recommended as a self-publisher. You can buy a single ISBN, a bundle of ten, or 100. Use them over the years as you continue to publish under your name. Having a publisher assign your ISBN is disadvantageous. The publisher’s identifier is almost as important as the author associated with the book.

Distribution

The excitement of being told that your book will be available in every store draws in naive first-timers. Soon-to-be authors image walking into a store and seeing their book sitting on the shelf. Predatory publishers do not explain that in today’s digital world, all books are available to every store. “Available” means that if a book store requests a book, the publisher will send them a copy. The bookstore will only request an unknown book by an unknown author if a customer asks for it. The book will never sit on a bookstore shelf. This setup is called “print-on-demand” and is available to every self-publisher.

“Print-on-demand” is the no-cost evolution in self-publishing. An author can order their books from a print-on-demand publisher at printing cost. The predatory publisher is an unnecessary entity. The publisher may charge the author $10 for each copy of their book that retails at $15.00. The author can then make a $5.00 profit when they sell the book. As reasonable as this sounds, it is not fair. If the author self-publishes on a print-on-demand platform, they can pay $5.00 for their printed book, and make the $10.00 profit. The publisher has again disadvantaged the author by requiring them to pay a higher amount for their product.

Sales

I would have had to sell 500 books to break even with my estimated publishing cost. Relatively few self-published books sell 500 copies. Selling that many copies of a book requires marketing — a lot of it. Marketing is where all of the work of becoming a successful author lies, not in the publishing process. Marketing is never included in predatory publishing. Marketing results in book exposure and sales. People have to see your book to buy it. Your book has to pop out among the more than 600 million books that are for sale. This work is left to the author. Marketing is where the enthusiasm of being an author wears off as the reality of stagnation sets in. The only time you see your book is when you post it on social media and when you look on your bookshelf at home. Marketing is a full-time job. If you have money to put into your career as an author, put it into marketing, not predatory publishing. You have a choice of learning from blogs, books, or digital programs, but you must learn how to do it. The only authors who do not have to spend time marketing their own books are top authors who publish with companies that pay them to write. If you have money to put into your career as an author, put it into marketing, not predatory publishing. Predatory publishers will convince novice authors that their book has been marketed. The publisher will send the author a link to various websites where they can find their book. Exciting, yes! The good news is that you get to share that link with the world, thus engaging in marketing. The bad news is that unless you repeatedly share that link, your book will not be seen. Your book will be buried within days, if not hours, of its debut on the market. The predatory publisher has done their job and chased your check.

Book Longevity

Like many authors, I work full-time and have little time for writing, much less marketing. My long-term plan is to have 10 books by the time I retire in 5 years. I write books that I believe are timeless. Right now, I do enough marketing to make a little change every month. When I retire, I plan to spend more time marketing my books. Some of the best-selling books are years old before they hit that status. I believe I already have at least one sleeping best-seller in my docket. As a self-publisher, I maintain 100% control of all of my products. All of my books are print-on-demand. I can charge a lower price for them when I want because I have a higher profit margin than I would with a publisher.

I sometimes lower a book’s cost when I sell face-to-face, like when I have a speaking engagement. I don’t want to carry any books back home and I want my books in the hands of people who have invested time with me already. I can also put them on sale online for holiday marketing since I control the cost.

Becoming an Apprentice

As a self-publisher, the cost of producing a book should be minimized. Paying someone to publish your book for you will not make you a profit. If you are writing for self-fulfillment, you have even less incentive to pay a publisher. Your highest cost for publishing should be your time. Take the time to produce a quality book. Spend your time learning how to do the tasks that are related to publishing your book.

Learn about book covers

Self-publishing platforms offer free book covers. You will select the design for your book cover when you upload it for release. The cover designs are the same as predatory publishers will likely use. Select the perfect book cover that for the least amount of money.

Investigate the services of a professional editor

There are three different types of editing. I will leave you the task of learning about them so that you know which one you need depending on the phase of the book writing you are in.

Learn how to price your book

Learning how to compare similar books will help with online pricing. However, if you plan to sell many books in person, such as through speaking engagements, you may need a different plan for pricing. I sell more books when I offer discounts on author-signed copies. I set a retail price with this factor in mind. There are more pricing variables to consider.

Learn how to use the various self-publishing platforms

They are not the same. Some only offer paperback, or e-books. Some platforms charge an upload fee (all less than $100), and other platforms have no cost. They all vary on the percentage of profit shared with the author.

Being a Publisher-writer

Authors can learn to do publishing tasks for free. Some authors learn the print-on-demand publishing process in a little as a few hours. Others may take a few months. If you are dissatisfied with your print-on-demand product, you can pull it from circulation, edit, and republish it. You don’t get redos with publishing companies. Once you approve the product, the contract is complete. If you later find typos or a missing paragraph, too bad. You can learn how to self-publish while you are still writing your book. Relieving yourself from the stress of finding a publisher can free your mind to write to completion. You learn the process once and will have the confidence to write as many books as you want. You will become more than an author. You will own a publishing company.
