To rid their stomachs of indigestible material, some sharks can force their stomachs inside-out through their mouths, wash it in sea water, then pull it back to its normal location. Shark intestines are short and compact.Even for 16-foot (4.8 metre) great whites, successfully excreting waste can take a bit of effort. A billowing cloud of shark poop can be a scientific gold mine, as it holds chemical clues about what the animal has been eating, its stress levels and even where it hails from.In fact, shark's don't pee as we know it at all. Their urine is actually absorbed by their flesh, where the urea is used to keep their scale-like dermal denticles nice and moist. The rest is simply expelled back into the water through their 'skin'.Coprolite (Fossilized Poop)Coprolite is the fancy term for poop. Shark coprolite comes in different shapes and sizes, but often has a spiral pattern on it from the shark intestinal tract where it was formed. Depending on the diet of the shark, there can sometimes be bone fragments in it.While an ant nest may not look much like a human home, they do have at least one feature in common: toilets. A team of researchers studying ant pooping patterns have discovered that ants like to deposit their business in specific corners of the nest. From a scientific standpoint, Esbaugh says that it's “definitely not true” that sharks are attracted to urine, and he assumes the rumor got started because many animals use scent to track their prey. But he says this doesn't hold up because humans aren't the most common meal for sharks. If you consider farting to be the by-product of digestion – in other words gases expelled from the rear end – then most fish don't fart. However there are two exceptions, the shark and the herring.Any bodily fluid released into the water is likely detectable by sharks. A shark's sense of smell is powerful – it allows them to find prey from hundreds of yards away. Menstrual blood in the water could be detected by a shark, just like any urine or other bodily fluids.Sharks with spiracles can rest on the sea floor to sleep while their spiracles continue to push water over their gills. This means that they can rest without having to worry about swimming to breathe.Via Southern Fried Science: According to Daniella Rabaiotti, a postdoctoral researcher at the Zoological Society of London, sand tiger sharks are the only shark known to fart.Just like many marine filter-feeders, whale sharks feed mostly on krill, small fish, larvae and other plankton. Add some digestive juices into the mix, and you're left with what has been described as "an unholy mingling of fart and fishiness", much like the smell produced by whale breath.A shark actually eating a human is rare and extremely unlikely - as we are not a natural prey item. Experts have found that if a shark bites human flesh, it will often spit it out or vomit it up.So, while most sharks will be 100% fine if they stop swimming, a few iconic species such as great white sharks, whale sharks, hammerheads and mako sharks would suffocate without forward motion or a strong current flowing towards their mouths.Instead, these sharks rely on obligate ram ventilation, a way of breathing that requires sharks to swim with their mouths open. The faster they swim, the more water is pushed through their gills. If they stop swimming, they stop receiving oxygen. They move or die.Apparently, it's just a way for the sharks to cleanse their stomachs. “It's basically rinsing it out,” Skomal says. A 2005 paper describing such behavior in a Caribbean reef shark seems to confirm that, saying that sharks do this to remove “indigestible food particles, parasites or mucus.”Alternatively, divers and swimmers can probably reduce the chance of an interaction with a shark by avoiding bright and highly contrasting swimwear or dive gear. We personally prefer to use dark blue or black fins, mask, tank, and wetsuit while diving.Made of very strong and thick bone, dolphin snouts are biological battering rams. Dolphins will position themselves several yards under a shark and burst upwards jabbing their snout into the soft underbelly of the shark causing serious internal injuries. The answer is very simple: Yes, it is ok to dive during your period and there is no evidence that your chances of being attacked by a shark increase (see more from Divers Alert Network). For instance, a 1997 study of 16 Americans found a volume-per-fart range of 17 milliliters to 375 milliliters. Imagine a bottle of nail polish — that's a rough analogy for the volume of the daintiest of poots.Since the stercoral sac contains bacteria, which helps break down the spider's food, it seems likely that gas is produced during this process, and therefore there is certainly the possibility that spiders do fart. Here's a mind-boggling fact: Almost all mammals fart, yet the sloth does not. I learned this because I read Does it Fart? A Definitive Field Guide to Animal Flatulence, which published in April.Generally, peeing in the ocean is totally fine, the ACS says – and it may even be beneficial to marine life, as the nitrogen in urea combines with water to produce ammonium, which feeds ocean plants.DON'T: Don't enter the water if you have any open wounds or are bleeding in any way, including females on their monthly period.Despite their scary reputation, sharks rarely ever attack humans and would much rather feed on fish and marine mammals. Only about a dozen of the more than 300 species of sharks have been involved in attacks on humans.
