Depending on how you want to Livestream on YouTube you will need to satisfy certain criteria which in some cases means a requirement for 1000 subscribers. If you have less than 1000 subscribers and are trying to Live Stream with a mobile devices such as iPhone and Android handset or tablet then you will not be able to go live using the YouTube app. However, this limitation does not apply to alternative Livestreaming methods including some 3rd party applications on mobile or desktop that allow manual streaming using an RTMP address and a stream key.

Check your YouTube account is enabled for Live Streaming

By default YouTube does not enable Live Streaming. To find out if your account is enabled then go into your YouTube account settings and check your account status.

This setting needs to be enabled

If your account is enabled already then you will be able to Live Stream. If it’s not then follow the link to enable is – you’ll see this next page.

Go into your account settings and make sure Live Streaming is enabled

You’ll see that it clearly states you need 1,000 subscribers to Live Stream. This ONLY applies to the official YouTube app. 3rd party apps and desktop computers do not need 1000 subscribers. Also of note on that page is that it may take up to 24 hours to enable Live Streaming for the first time. That applies to all streaming on the account.

Mobile apps that can Live Stream to YouTube

Very important update late November 2020 regarding YouTube Live on Mobile

Since we originally published this article YouTube has changed the policy on mobile streaming by users with under 1,000 subscribers using their API. Some applications and devices have been reclassified by YouTube. Developers are being advised that devices like the Mevo camera will require 1,000 subscribers to use the API to livestream. However, it will still be possible to stream via RTMP to YouTube with Mevo camera with under 1,000 subs. It’s slightly less convenient than the API method but it works perfectly well.

Live from Mevo

Note – If you’re a Mevo or Mevo+ user then see my other Mevo articles here. There are lots of other apps with Live Streaming features. If you know a good live streaming app for mobile then please add it in the comments section below.

Streaming to YouTube from a desktop computer

Once your YouTube account has Live Streaming enabled (note you may need to wait 24 hrs for that – see above) then you can go live directly from YouTube Creator Studio from your browser with a webcam or use software like OBS, vMix or Wirecast. OBS is free but does not include the YouTube API. You’ll need to set up a stream inside YouTube Creator Studio and get a stream key. There are lots of OBS tutorials online – especially on YouTube. vMix and most other commercial Live Streaming software are fully integrated with the YouTube API. This makes it much easier to go live without needing to copy and paste codes from one place to another.
