Social workers help people cope with and find resources for a variety of problems, including domestic abuse, poverty, emotional and physical disabilities and drug addiction. Social workers need to at least earn a bachelor's degree for an entry-level position and obtain a license in their state. Many social workers go on to get a master's degree. But a good foundation of basic courses in everything from English to psychology can help aspiring social workers get a good start in developing the critical thinking, writing and diagnostic skills they will need on the job. And when they get a social work degree they can expect to find plentiful jobs, as the field is expected to grow by 16 percent between 2016 and 2026

English and Communications

Prepare early for a helping profession. Social workers spend a lot of time writing reports and speaking with clients. English classes that teach students to analyze works and write about them are helpful, as are speech and journalism classes if offered. English classes featuring contemporary literature can expose students to a diversity of problems, situations and people they may not be acquainted with in high school

Learning about human behavior, mental illnesses, how societies and cultures function and social relationships can prepare you to move on to college courses that offer a higher level of study of psychology and sociology

Biology, Anatomy and Physiology

Science courses that focus on the human body and biological principles help social workers understand physical problems their clients may be facing. Medical social workers help patients being discharged from the hospital, facing terminal illness or living with disabilities find resources and treatment options to help them. These courses will provide a background in the basic science behind their ailments.
