Why Marketers Need a Better Work-Life Balance

Generally, marketing is a great career to have. It’s flexible and various work-from-home opportunities are available in the job market today. Most marketers work online — and with the wide range of communication tools available — most companies allow flexible work hours. Therefore, marketers can work from anywhere, as long as they have internet access. Flexibility is one aspect of the job that most people love. It serves them in various ways that full-time office workers can’t receive. However, working from home has its downsides. You may feel tempted to overwork yourself and blur the line between work and home life boundaries. Some lead themselves to burnout, making it difficult to maintain relationships, a household and overall well-being.

Here’s why marketers should have a better work-life balance.

Having a Work-Life Balance Is Healthy

You have a constant connection in today’s world. Every minute you’re not working, you’re still tethered continuously to it because of your smartphone. For example, you might receive tons of emails over the weekend. It can be difficult not to check them because something might demand your attention on personal time.

Your smartphone is the main technology where your personal and work life intersect. In one survey, at least half of email users constantly check their email on the weekends. However, interacting with work while not on the job leads to stress. The more burnout you experience, the more it isn’t good for everyone, especially for you, your family and your establishment. Consider setting boundaries for yourself. You can’t be expected to answer every email that lands in your inbox at all hours.

Work-Life Balance is Good for Business

While many workers believe a significant increase in income is important with a job, that’s not the only reason marketers stay or leave their employment. Many studies suggest that most people quit because of their boss. Therefore, a healthy work-life balance is something to encourage amongst your team. Even though it’s not as simple as suggesting time off from the office, this is a huge factor in employee retention.

In a 2018 survey, 72% of employees said work-life balance is “very important” when choosing a job. Encouraging a work-life balance benefits your marketing team and helps with employee engagement. As a result, they’ll feel better about their job and are more likely to produce more output for your business. Eventually, you’ll drive more revenue in the long run, too.

Employee Engagement Means More Productivity

Employee engagement means your marketing team is more involved in their work. They’re also enthusiastic about it and are committed to doing their job the best way possible. However, part of the workforce isn’t engaged. In a Gallup poll, employee disengagement has slightly increased from 14% in 2020 to 15% in 2021 in the U.S.

Employees who are disengaged are miserable at work — and it appears to be contributing to a healthy work-life balance. Establishing a life outside of work is crucial for keeping your marketing team productive. When your employees have a greater sense of engagement, absenteeism decreases. They take fewer sick days, and you have less turnover. In turn, you may find that a better work-life balance will positively impact your bottom line.

How Marketers Can Have a Healthier Work-Life Balance

Work-life balance can have a different meaning for every person. However, everyone can take certain steps to ensure they have a healthy one. Here are a few tips busy marketing professionals can use to successfully maintain a healthy work-life balance in such a demanding industry.

1. Know Your Priorities

The biggest challenge for many leaders is determining who needs help and how to manage it all. Yet, knowing where and how to spend your time is directly correlated to how successful you reach a work-life balance. Consider taking time to identify what’s most important. For instance, you may want to focus on developing key relationships and doing activities that add value. When you establish priorities, you can invest more quality time into your relationships and activities. Think of which things are wasting your time. You may need to cut them out. Then, you can focus on the items that make you most satisfied — and prioritize them.

Anything else that falls behind those valuable elements can take a backseat.

If you minimize time wasted on things that don’t matter, you maximize your time on activities you enjoy. As a result, you alleviate the pressure and strain you place on yourself.

2. Understand Where You’re at in Your Career

If you’re starting your marketing career, you’re most likely spending time transitioning into the industry. As a result, you make a serious effort to learn and figure out things in your new job. At the beginning of your career, it can be challenging to establish a work-life balance. Then as you work your way up to senior leadership positions, you have more demanding responsibilities. The key is to perform to the highest degree in any position to grow your career. Even though everyone’s path varies, make it a point to manage a balance at the beginning. For instance, preparing yourself for the transition with checklists and reading up on the latest trends will help you easily manage all aspects of your life.

Technology can affect every aspect of your life, especially since you’re digitally connected to the world around you.

One survey shows one in five U.S. smartphone users don’t limit their use of mobile apps and services. While technology benefits personal and professional lives, it only makes it more challenging to check out from your job. Marketing is a digitally-driven business. Therefore, you may even feel more pressure to check emails as a marketer. However, it’s important to unplug from your device and live in the moment. Consider detaching yourself entirely from your phone and other devices for a few hours each day. Doing so will allow you to detox yourself from technology and feel more refreshed when coming back to it.

4. Set Boundaries

Establishing clear boundaries is the key to maintaining a healthy balance between your personal and professional lives. In marketing, you have never-ending deliverables and constant demands. Marketers work well past overtime to meet deadlines. In this type of setting, establishing boundaries can be even more challenging. The workday can feel endless and can be damaging to your well-being. However, it helps if you avoid this stress at all costs by creating a plan. For instance, establish a time where you can stop checking emails and work-related items. Then, create a space where you can get all of your work done by a specific time. Setting a clear cutoff time allows you to manage a heavy workload more efficiently. You’ll know exactly when you can unplug and relax — and it will help you maintain your productivity during work while avoiding burnout altogether.

Set Yourself Up for Work-Life Balance Success

Marketers may find it challenging to meet the high demands of this fast-paced industry. And as they become more digitally connected to the world, it can be easy to think you’re working all hours of the day. Ultimately, it comes to how you manage your time, productivity levels and performance at work. However, using these tips will help you focus better, enjoy your downtime and maintain work-life more effectively. So ensure you’re taking steps to control your career and life today.
