Unlike other fields, there are a variety of components that determine a recruiter’s pay. As they fill roles for a company, they will either receive compensation through their salary, a bonus, or commission. In essence, the recruiter is on your side. Securing an offer for you is also beneficial to them.

Although you might have experience working with a recruiter in your job search, you may be uncertain who they are working for. You also might not be sure how they receive pay. Despite their service to you, recruiters will never ask you for compensation as they aren’t career coaches. At the core of their work, recruiters intend to find the right candidate for a job listing. However, they do not write the job description — it is provided as with any job seeker. Nor do they have any authority to hire an applicant. Instead, they review candidates and look for one that aligns most closely with a company’s criteria and qualifications. As the Great Reshuffle continues, recruiters’ part in the hiring process has never felt more valuable. In a labor market where 86% of recruiters and 62% of employers say it is driven by candidates, a lot of emphasis is being placed on the role of recruiters. Recruiter Brittney Swan expresses her love for her work, saying, “The gratitude and thanks I have received from multiples of these scenarios makes it all worthwhile. Some assume our job is to find job seekers jobs. It’s not. Our job is to fill a position with a candidate that fits the needs of the company.”

Types of Recruiters

Recruiters can be categorized as internal recruiters and external recruiters. Internal refers to employed recruiters who only work to fill positions within their company. This is typically associated with larger companies such as Google. Meanwhile, external recruiters can work on their own or within an agency to fill positions across multiple companies. These umbrella terms encompass a range of recruiters, including corporate recruiters, retained recruiters, contingency recruiters, outplacement recruiters, and staffing agency recruiters. Each type can be described as either internal or external, partly based on how they are paid. Since internal recruiters have a salary with a cap on their compensation, they are generally paid less than external recruiters who receive commission. Internal recruiters can make an average of nearly $80,000 in a year. They also tend to receive a regular performance bonus. Tech companies often offer equity as well. External recruiters like staffing agencies can be paid with a salary plus commission. They are given something called a recruitment fee from their clients. The amount of payments can vary based on the candidate’s salary. Many agencies incorporate temporary contracts which pay residual commission to a recruiter. However, the specific amount for commission depends on the specific agency.

Recruiter Kristen Fife says, “Independent or 1099 contractors can receive pay through hourly compensation, retained search.” The lump sum is provided upfront and may be negotiated in terms of a percentage with the balance when filled or just a single amount. Fife adds, “Executive and 'retained search' are generally paid some variant of this model.”

How Recruiters Are Paid

Recruiters are commonly paid through contingency, container, and retainer. Contingency means the recruiter isn’t paid until the candidate is confirmed for the position. In a sense, the recruiter is competing with the company similar to how a candidate might negotiate a salary. They could also be racing to find the right candidate as other external recruiters could have been hired by a client. When the company doesn’t go through with hiring a candidate, the recruiter doesn’t receive a contingency payment. This can make a recruiter’s relationship with a candidate feel more like a partnership, as they’re rooting for them to be hired. In contrast, a retainer implies that a recruiter is paid before a candidate is chosen by a company. In these situations, there isn’t a sense of competition among multiple recruiters. Lastly, a container sees a combination of both contingency and retainer. A recruiter receives half of their payment before finding a candidate, which is referred to as the engagement fee. After the candidate has been hired, they are paid the rest. The payment that a recruiter receives can vary drastically depending on a client and the level of a position. Recruiters generally make around $34,000 to $60,000 in a year. By recognizing the way that recruiters are typically paid, you can rest assured that they are on your side. During your job search, they want the same thing that you do.
