Impacts on Behavior Online

First of all, Talia starts thinking and reading about how social media can affect behavior online. She knows that there is rarely one effect that occurs for every person, but she does learn about some general trends: Social media tends to lead people to accentuate the positive in their online profiles. Of course, it isn't unheard of to share sadness and struggles, and many people use social media to find support in times of trouble. As a rule, though, people use social media to create idealized, or more perfect than realistic, versions of themselves to share with others. Social media blurs the lines of what's private, as well as what's personal versus professional. Talia has noticed that some of her friends share things on their social media profiles that might have been considered private or personal in a past generation, but now are available to all of their professional colleagues and broader social networks.

Social media can make people more likely to engage in conflict online.

Many people feel more comfortable voicing an adversarial opinion behind the anonymity of social media than they would, for example, in person. This can both exacerbate conflicts and, in Talia's observation, lead to interesting debates.

Social media can cause people to maintain stronger connections.

Talia herself is now in much better touch, for instance, with her childhood friends than she would be without the help of social media. Posting pictures and stories can help her friends see what's going on in her life, and give her insight into theirs.

Social media can make people more aware of current events and politics.

At the same time, it can filter the type of information people are receiving so that their opinions become more extreme versions of what they would already be. People tend to participate more in online activism, though, as a result of social media.

Sourcing content, specifically video, can be a very difficult task. First, you have to find the content, then get permission to use it from the videographer, then lock in approval on the brand side, then get legal approval internally, then externally, and only then is your campaign safe to leverage the content on Owned & Operated platforms, commercials, etc. Then, then, then!
