Fortunately, you can approach mid-interview salary questions with these four tactics.

1. Sidestep the Question

Before you contemplate answering the salary question, keep in mind that some states have banned employers from asking about salary history. If salary history isn’t a part of the question and they just want to know your expectations, you can sidestep by saying that you’d like to hear more details about the job and the company’s goals and strategies before discussing your salary expectations. That way, an employer is aware that you don’t want to rush to cite a number and would rather have all of the information so you can make an informed decision.

2. Reassure Your Interviewer

Another way not to discuss salary during an interview is by reassuring your interviewer that you’re keenly interested in the job and are willing to negotiate. You can also tell your interviewer that you’re open to considering the entire compensation package. This helps you prolong having to answer the question and lets them know that you’re interested in learning more about the entire salary and benefits package.

3. Pivot and Change the Subject

If you are asked to give your salary expectations in an interview, you can pivot away from the question altogether and answer their question with one of your own. Below are some examples.

“Can you tell me more about the growth potential for this role?”

“How will performance be evaluated for this position?”

“What are the overall goals for the company in the next 3-5 years and how will the person in this role impact that?” These are all valid questions that you should ask an employer in an interview anyway, but timing them to coincide with the salary question helps you change the subject in a professional yet firm manner.

4. Turn the Question Around

Although this may not let you completely off the hook when discussing salary during an interview, you can at least get more information by turning the same question back on the interviewer. By asking what salary range they have in mind for the job, you’ll be able to respond with an answer that falls within their range. Or, you can simply say, “That range coincides with my salary requirements, as well.” If, however, the range they give is lower than your expectations and you aren’t willing to negotiate down, this may be a good time to let them know what your minimum salary requirement is.

Do Your Research

Do some research to fully understand your market value before you go into the interview.

Give a Range

It’s a good idea to give a salary range (and never a specific number) during a job interview. For example, you could say, “I am willing to accept between $55,000-$65,000.” But here’s the trick: make sure that your low-end range number is one that you’re comfortable accepting since many employers will likely veer toward that number. Even better, make your ideal salary the low-end anchor of the range for the most favorable outcome. And don’t make the range too wide (5% to 25% generally yields the best results), as that can imply to a potential employer that you either don’t know the median salary for the job or are driving too hard a bargain.

Answering on an Application

Some employers include salary as a question on your application. If it’s possible, leave the section blank. But if you have to answer the question in order to submit your application, give a range, if possible, or write in an answer that states that you’d like to know more about the job before committing to a figure.
