Remember, you don’t have to walk for thirty minutes on your first day. In fact, you probably shouldn’t. Start with a time goal that feels comfortable for you, and stop when you want to rest. Even ten minutes per day is a great start. Gradually add more steps, and choose a pace that feels safe and comfortable. While you’re walking, pay attention to how you’re feeling, especially if you have a specific health challenge. If you experience any pain, stop and rest. If you begin to feel weak or dizzy, find a safe place to sit down. When you’re ready, head home and call your doctor. It’s also important to stay hydrated, so drink plenty of water. If you use a cane or a walker, that’s no problem. These can help you with balance and can ease impact and joint pain. You may need to modify your pace and distance, but as long as your doctor says it’s okay, don’t let a cane or walker stop you from getting your steps in.
