Read More »We never knew we couldn't imagine life without social media until it became a vital part of our lives. For some people, going a few hours without using social media is unimaginable. Three major social media sites; Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram had a global outage for around 6 hours on Monday evening, causing a stir among social media users. At first, everyone assumed it was a network problem, and they all attempted to reconnect to the internet. According to Downdetector, it was the largest outage the company had ever seen, with 10.6 million faults reported. The services fell at 9 p.m. and were restored around 3 a.m. Later, the social media companies issued a statement claiming that they are aware of the problem with certain users being unable to use Facebook, WhatsApp, or Instagram. It is believed that it was a DNS issue that caused the global outage. During the interruption, Facebook's stock dropped 4.9 percent. More than 75,000 people have complained about WhatsApp, with 43% citing issues with the program itself, 28% citing difficulty with transmitting messages, and 28% citing server connection issues. What happens if we suddenly lose access to social media? We are accustomed to living in a constantly linked world, and the prospect of losing networks such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram makes us feel insecure. One of the most serious issues is that we have allowed these platforms to invade our lives to the point where we can't imagine a day without them. Social media has become an integral part of modern life, and there is no denying that it has some advantages. Many researchers looked at the effects of removing social media from our lives, some of which were positive and some of which were negative. For some users, losing access to social media will be a nightmare, but what will happen if we do? For the first hour, people will think that it’s some servers issue and they just down as the flow of information comes to a crashing halt. The generation who grew up with social media will be anxious and agitated about keeping up with what's going on in the world. Many people around us rely on social media to stay in touch with friends and family, and the mere thought of losing access to it will make them afraid of missing out. We can see what is happening in the life of others. But, one of the consequences of being able to see what everyone we know is up to at all times and in every stage of their lives is that it's difficult not to compare our apparent achievements to theirs and conclude that we're falling short. Many people have been able to express themselves on social media while hiding behind a pseudonym. That isn't necessarily a positive thing. These anonymous internet warriors aren't responsible for the repercussions of their actions, whether they're impolite, confrontational, or plain hostile. Social media has had a great impact on our lives as a result of all of this. If one day social media unexpectedly stops, we may start talking to each other again. Instead of fretting about things we can't control on the other side of the planet, we might start paying attention to what's going on in our communities. We might put down our phones and spend more time outside. Instead of looking at a small screen for hours, we could spend our evenings talking, reading, and enjoying life. We may become more aware of how our words and social media posts might affect ourselves and others.
