Types of Mass Media

There are six major types of mass media. The first is traditional media, which is based on indigenous methods of information transfer, such as drama, paintings, and songs. The second type is print media, which is a form of information communication through print media. It includes magazines, newspapers, and brochures. The third type is electronic/broadcasting media, which involves communication through audio, visual, or audiovisual electronic systems. It includes televisions, radios, and motion pictures. The fourth type is outdoor media, which involves communication through outdoor channels. It includes billboards, posters, wallscape, and compark advertising. The fifth type is transit media, which consists of communicating information during movement. Examples include transit shelter advertising in train stations and bus advertising. Finally, the sixth type is digital media advertising, which provides communication through the internet. Digital media includes social media and SNS sites, emails, websites, and internet protocol television.

Newspaper

A newspaper is a publication printed on low-cost papers. The information presented in newspapers is usually up-to-date. Newspapers are the original news platforms. They are vital, as they are affordable to most readers. They address general audiences and thus are essential in passing public information such as government policies and untargeted advertisement. They often cover specific subjects, such as science newsletters, making them necessary communication tools to skilled audiences. Due to the need to appeal to larger audiences, newspapers endeavor to become bipartisan. Writers and journalists are essential contributors who gather information and then publish it in a newspaper. They enable the functionality of newspapers. The advancement of technology has forced newspaper-producing organizations to produce online copies.

Radio

The radio incorporates communication through magnetic waves. It came to life in the early 20th century and has become a monumental part of communication. Between 1920 and 1945, it monopolized mass media communication by providing news and entertainment. It has become an accepted part of communication alongside magazines and newspapers ever since. People tune in to the radio by listening to stations transmitting through radio waves. Currently, transmission occurs through digital satellites and the internet.

Television

Television delivers images through moving objects and sounds. It occurs through radio waves, coaxial cables, internet streamlining, or direct broadcast satellite. Television was made as a replacement for radio, as it used the same frequency wavelength as the common radio. It began as a standard black and white before shifting to color imagery. Since its discovery and use, it has become an essential medium in mass media. Constant improvements have made it compatible and attachable to modes of transport, such as cars and trains.

Internet

The internet is a critical tool of communication within mass media. It is more interactive and functions as a chain of networks. It is readily available globally due to the interconnection between multiple nodes, servers, and computers. It is essential because it allows real-time information transfer and can accommodate other modes of communication, such as television, radio, and newspaper. The internet has increased exposure to information, ensuring unrestricted access to information sharing. However, its strength is its weakness, as it reduces the ability to verify the credibility of shared information. Internet usage increases the ability to communicate with global audiences and combines both imagery and audio modes of communication. It also facilitates peer-to-peer communication.

What do you mean by new media?

New media — often known as multimedia or digital media — relies on digital means to communicate, as opposed to traditional media like print newspapers or television. New media technologies include blogs, videos, websites and internet ads.

It’s no exaggeration that the digital age has transformed how businesses and creatives connect with their audience. While print newspapers and TV ads can still facilitate this connection, new technologies present new opportunities. Social media, for example, allows users to form personal connections with businesses and brands that the one-way nature of print newspapers and TV ads preclude. Print newspapers, TV ads, billboards — these are known as traditional media. They don’t rely on digital technology to connect with an audience. New media, on the other hand, refers to platforms that depend on digital technology to communicate with an audience. In today’s nomenclature, new media can also often be referred to as digital media or multimedia.
