If you go on enough cruises, you might hear about what it secretly means to have an upside down pineapple on your cabin door. While pineapples are a popular form of tropical decoration, an upside down pineapple has a completely different connotation to it among married couples that enjoy sharing partners. Believe it or not, an upside down pineapple is code to let others know that you are swingers. If you're not familiar with that term, it means you are open to engaging freely in sex. Upside down pineapples aren't just a cruise thing; the symbol is also known on land for swinging/wife swapping. To be honest, this may or may not be more of an urban legend than something that actually happens on cruise ships, but it's something that gets repeated enough by cruisers that it's worth at least mentioning to avoid any unintentional consequences. If swinging is your thing, you may be better off booking a swingers charter cruise, rather than hoping for some luck on a random sailing. On swinger cruises, rooms and rules are set up for those interested in meeting others onboard for that sort of thing. It's unlikely on a regular revenue cruise that someone would seriously mistake you for a swinger based purely on a door magnet or decoration. Upside down pineapples don't have to be limited to your cabin decorations. The symbol could be displayed on clothing, rings, or even tattoos.

What about regular pineapples?

If you have pineapples that are right side up on your cabin decorations or clothing, you don't have anything to worry about. Pineapples have become popular again in fashion, so don't feel like embracing that motif will give anyone the wrong idea about you.
