In our modern times, and as it happens throughout changes in generations, our youth have trouble navigating their transition from school life to the workforce. From my years as a supervisor in our great country's military, I will share with you that which has brought me success and numerous accolades propelling my forward in life. I will be utilizing information from Technical Communication (Markel/Selber, 2018) and Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires: Professionalism in the Workplace (Shanken, 2015). The Google dictionary defines professionalism as 'the competence or skill expected of a professional.' This definition doesn't give us much to work with, so I will elaborate with my three C's of professionalism: Confidence, Courtesy, and Charisma.

Confidence

At first glance, one may assume this is a trait that comes with years of practice. A person may need 'confidence-building' experiences to improve their skill. The key to being ready to hit the ground running is the expertise in your field. Preparation for the job and your thirst for knowledge in your collegiate or technical studying years creates sound footing for your potential career. No boss expects you to know everything. Developing the tools to identify what you don't know is true wisdom to carry into any discourse. Do not be afraid to admit when you don't know something, but having the ability to rapidly acquire the answer gives you a substructure to lean upon. In essence, having the foundation of understanding of your trade along with believing in your abilities, will provide all the confidence you need to be an immediate asset to your team.

Courtesy

This particular trait doesn't require an in-depth discussion, but more so a reminder of being approachable and kind to others. Face your colleagues when they speak and give them your undivided attention. By doing so, you express what they have to say matters. In our trying times of societal change, we all come from different backgrounds. The expectation may not be to use 'Yes Sir, No Ma'am,' however, a simple yes or no is far better than Yeah or Nah. Speaking without slang goes a long way to promote your ideas to both your supervisors and your peers. And although one may be tempted to tell a joke, it is likely better reserved for times away from work where the atmosphere is relaxed. As time passes in a given work environment, you will learn who your fellow employees are, and there most certainly should be times of levity as we all need a good laugh. It would be best to tell a joke with yourself or your shortcomings being the focus.

Charisma

My last trait focuses mainly on your attitude in the workplace. Having an upbeat and can-do demeanor around your coworkers can be just as infectious as a negative vibe. I am not saying we shouldn't be affected by the hardships we may endure in our lives. The workplace, however, is not the place to wear our emotions on our sleeve. If you do encounter that not so cheerful person, extend a helping hand. Hopefully, if we are getting the job done in a timely and efficient manner that builds the morale of the team. Being happy at work and enjoying what we are doing improves productivity throughout.

Summary

Each of the three C's has components that contribute to each other. By routinely using these traits, you should not only see an improved environment for yourself but also those around you. I benefited plenty throughout my Naval career, being able to effectively sell my ideas to my superiors, based on technical accuracy and knowledge of requirements, and instill the trust that the job would get done correctly.
