Read More »Pay attention to negative patterns in your approach to work, which can sink your career . Alter your attitude and you can correct the rot before it is too late.Do you consistently fail to meet deadlines and does your work rank lowest in quality audits? Either you are taking on tasks way over your head or not putting in the work required. You are over-committing and building false expectations. Soon you are branded ‘unreliable’, losing out on increments, opportunities and promotions. Get out of this rut by making commitments you can fulfil. Work hard to beat deadlines and targets by a reasonable margin consistently over the next 3 months and rebuild your image. The biggest hurdle to getting ahead in your career is usually YOU. When you are plagued by self-doubt or worry about your capabilities, it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. You rarely take on challenges, offer opinion or re-assure your boss that you will take care of that critical project. Keep yourself busy to leave no time for worries. Get out of your comfort zone by speaking up and volunteering for opportunities. Whether you are capable or not is for your manager to decide. If your worst fears come true and you do fail, focus on the learning outcomes and know your career is moving ahead.Seeking perfection does more harm to your career than good. By Pareto’s principle, 20% efforts will yield 80% of desired outcomes while 80% more energy is required to achieve the balance 20% outcomes or the perfection you seek. Unless you are exercising mission critical skills as a rocket scientist or a neuro surgeon, 100% perfection is rarely expected. The amount of energy and time you spend on one task reduces your productivity elsewhere. Set hard and short deadlines on each task and let others judge on quality. Knowing where to seek perfection and where to conserve efforts is the art of seeing the big picture and is a necessary skill to become a manager/leader.If you think of a goal as the top of a mountain and imagine a straight road to reach there, how will you deal with insurmountable obstacles in your path? You will probably call it quits and then make failure a recurrent theme. Treat success like a broad spectrum instead of a specific destination. Each obstacle that seems too high gives you an opportunity to learn new skills and then go around it instead of going over it. Use lateral moves in your career to gain new perspectives. Be positive and keep moving constantly in the general direction of your goals instead of committing to a single path or event. How do you describe yourself when introduced to people in your personal and professional circles? If it is all about your job, you are probably a uni-dimensional person. Linking your identity and life to your current role limits your personal development. Lack of balance in life renders you ineligible for senior management roles. Spare a few hours a week for yourself. Invest in relationships, hobbies and in self-reflection to gain perspective.Chasing money is a terrible plan to build a career on. Switching jobs for salary alone will take you to roles where you lack either the skills or the enthusiasm to be successful. Build a career plan based on skills you need to learn, responsibilities that match your interests and roles that fulfil you while giving you fair market compensation.Do you obsessively focus on tasks at the cost of relationships at your workplace? If you ignore or rub people the wrong way each time, you lose team harmony, individual cooperation and loyalty when things get tough. You are perceived as a mercenary or a gladiator and not a general who can lead people to extraordinary goals, limiting your career growth. Treat relationship building as an important goal in your task list and set aside time for it. Work on interpersonal skills as much as you would on your technical skills. Proficiency in both insures your success.Do you seek security, ease and repeatability at your workplace while treating new ideas with scepticism? You may be resisting change and getting fossilised and irrelevant very quickly in the modern workplace where both job definitions and technology are changing rapidly. To avoid this, drop negative words from your vocabulary. Treat each idea with an open mind knowing that there are alternate approaches to every task and problem. Seek new learnings from every change and refuse to be left behind in a dynamic changing world.(The writer is Director, Executive Hiring, at QuezX.com.)
