For many major companies, what started out of necessity continues out of superiority. When the coronavirus began to spread in early 2020, remote work looked temporary. But recent polling suggests that around half of workplaces are planning for a hybrid model where workers can split their work time between the office and home (or a coffee shop). Just under a third said they plan to require all workers to work full-time on-site. The rest are going fully remote or distributed. Adobe plans to gather for the ‘moments that matter.’ They encourage employees and management to develop their own “cadence” for remote and in-person work. They developed a new app for employees and teams to stay connected. Imagine a group chat with your coworkers featuring a Facebook-style news feed specific to your team and with features enabling lunch orders placed to food service.

2. Amazon

Model: Hybrid, office first

Amazon is allowing employees to work remotely two days a week. They’ve included the option for three days or more remote, at the expense of the employee’s designated brick and mortar office space. The company intends to keep offices open across the country, providing some stability for commercial real estate.

3. Amgen

Model: Hybrid, depending on role

With eight offices in the U.S., the biotech company offers a hybrid work setup for many employees. Leadership in human resources emphasizes flexibility in a post-pandemic work world. Many R&D employees and manufacturing specialists continue to report each day while others work from home full-time.

4. Apple

Model: Hybrid, office-first

Apple embraced remote work, but intends to limit most employees to no more than two remote days a week. Employees continue to call for adjustments to the plan, but in the meantime Apple’s offices in Cupertino, CA and Austin, TX remain open.

5. Capital One

Model: Hybrid with a fully remote option

The financial services firm plans for a hybrid set up for many employees, while supporting fully remote exceptions to the policy. The majority of contact center associates continue to work exclusively from home

6. Cisco

Model: Hybrid

Cisco’s approach to work centers on a hybrid setup – without the mandate for employees to participate. Teams can determine the best way to function and decide from there. Offices reach across the U.S. with Cisco headquarters located in San Jose, California.

7. Coinbase

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

Coinbase is pursuing a remote-first future with hopes of decentralizing operations from a single headquarters and broadening their talent pool to include non-local employees. Employees can choose to report to the offices in San Francisco or three other U.S. cities for a hybrid work setup.

8. Deutsche Bank

Model: Hybrid with a fully remote option

Deutsche Bank moved New York operations to a smaller office and has not ruled out downsizing to smaller offices distributed throughout the U.S. Employees can build hybrid work situations without a universal minimum requirement for in-office days.

9. Deloitte

Model: Hybrid, depending on department

The international consulting firm features more than 80 American offices, but allows workers to choose between in-office or home office setups. Remote work depends on managerial arrangements and could involve a hybrid arrangement.

10. Dropbox

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

Dropbox allows for employees to transition into permanent telecommuters. Remote work became the “day-to-day default” for individual workers starting in October 2020. Their concept includes redesigning existing office spaces to be collaborative co-working spaces for use by employees as needed.

The social media company offers remote work based on seniority and with one caveat. Relocation will likely result in salary adjustment based on the new location. For now, recent graduates who join the team cannot work remotely. CEO Mark Zuckerburg predicts about half of employees will be remote over the next few years. With more than 30 offices in the U.S., candidates can choose from a number of locations based on their role.

12. Ford

Around 30,000 Ford employees can continue remote working – reporting to offices for important meetings and projects. Depending on the role, employees can choose from 22 offices in the U.S.

13. Google

Google granted many requests to continue working remotely, but will keep offices open. Reports indicate pay cuts are possible for employees choosing to work from home full-time. Employees and applicants do have more than 35 U.S. cities to choose from when deciding where they prefer to commute.

14. Hubspot

Hubspot removed ‘ish’ from ‘remote-ish’ to allow employees more autonomy. With three options to choose from, employees can build a work style that suits them. With three office locations, employees can alter their work style once per year.

15. Indeed

Model: Hybrid with a fully remote option

Based in Connecticut and Texas, Indeed plans for permanent remote work post-pandemic. Leadership anticipates the majority of employees qualifying to work from home at least some of the time. They emphasize flexibility to allow employees to find their best working style.

16. LinkedIn

Model: Hybrid with a fully remote option

LinkedIn removed the expectation for employees to return to the office. Employees choose from two options: full-time remote or part-time remote/part-time in-office. Candidates can find offices in eight cities throughout the U.S.

17. Microsoft

Model: Hybrid, depending on role

Microsoft plans a hybrid work situation that responds to changing trends in pandemic data while working linearly toward a post-coronavirus standard of at least some remote work for most roles.

Pinterest announced early on that employees will not be expected to return to the office and canceled a large lease on office space in San Francisco. They intend to expand their talent pool like many remote-first companies to include employees previously excluded by geography. Pinterest still maintains offices in eight U.S. cities.

19. Salesforce

Model: Hybrid, with the option to work fully remote

Salesforce offers full-time remote work options to employees lacking access to their offices or those with roles suitable for remote work. There is room for employees who prefer hybrid work and even in-office roles.

20. SAP

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

SAP found a way to offer remote work options to all 102,000 employees around the globe. While physical offices remain, the company intends to focus more on a trust-based workplace – no matter employees’ location.

21. Shopify

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

Shopify announced its ‘digital by default’ status in May of 2020. Early on in the pandemic, CEO Tobi Lutke tweeted that most of his offices would “permanently work remotely” even after the pandemic ends. When available, employees can choose from two offices – one in Canada and one in Ireland.

22. Siemens

Model: Hybrid

Siemens announced a simple remote work policy for more than 100,000 employees. Siemens’ new policy on remote work focuses on quality over quantity. Instead of emphasizing the number of hours employees must spend in the office, the company shifted its focus to the results employees produce.

23. Slack

Model: Hybrid, depending on role

Slack opened most new roles to remote candidates while allowing current employees to work from home indefinitely. While the offices will remain in some form, employees and candidates have choices for their work style.

In a move supporting the will of individual employees, Spotify provides employees with options to work from wherever, whenever. The best part? If you want to work in the office but don’t live near the existing Spotify workspaces, they’ll rent you a workspace where you live.

25. State Farm

The insurance giant shuttered a dozen offices throughout the U.S. Part of these closings coincided with existing plans to consolidate into three U.S. cities: Atlanta, Dallas, and Phoenix. Leadership intends for around 40,000 employees to work remotely.

Stepping out from similar financial firms, Synchrony tells employees they can’t come back to the office five days a week. As a result, leadership downsized office space with only 12 ‘hybrid hubs’ where employees can find desk space on a regular basis.

While retail locations continue to grow, Target relinquished one of its corporate office spaces. They promise “alternative office accommodations” for those employees, including remote-work and transfers to other brick-and-mortar offices.

29. TIAA

Model: Hybrid, depending on role

For about 85% of TIAA employees, the office is optional – at least part of the time. The Charlotte, NC office remodeled in the interest of more flexible work set-ups while the 73 other offices remain open for employees.

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

CEO Jack Dorsey was one of the first tech companies to announce moving employees to permanent remote work. Workers desiring an in-office experience can choose between San Francisco and New York, along with nine other cities across the U.S.

31. Upwork

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

Upwork continues to operate two offices, but launched a remote-first approach in 2020. Employees can operate from home full-time, or use the offices in Chicago and San Francisco.

32. Verizon

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

New hires at the communications firm receive training focused on remote work while more than 12,000 current employees in customer service and telesales remain remote. Overall, Verizon leaders envision a hybrid approach.

33. Quora

Model: Hybrid, remote-first

In June 2020, CEO Adam D’Angelo noted that technologies and remote capabilities were likely to improve much sooner than commutes, housing costs, and immigration processes. For that reason, they’ve decided to invest in building the remote work experience instead of trying to recapture the office-centric work style.

Going forward

The sudden shift to include more remote work at companies across the U.S. impacts the current workforce differently than future workers. As companies test new working models, the workforce to come can permanently alter their career path in a way unheard of even five years ago. Rather than focusing on solely remote roles or exclusively in-person positions, new workers can choose both. The first few years may take place in-office before moving to a new location – and company – as they build experience in pursuit of career success. For workers steeped in office commutes and in-person work, opportunities continue to open offering choices to continue their path or try something different. The future of work arrived earlier than expected offering unrestrained opportunity throughout each industry.
