The tiger, sleek and fierce, is sometimes put in a cage for display in a zoo, where he is fed day after day until, finally, he not only forgets how to hunt, but forgets he ever could to begin with. What an article in the Financial Times describes as "first job syndrome" is kind of like that. It's when you get a job early in your career and stay there for a long, long time to the point where it clouds knowledge of your own worth, and inhibits your ability to not only ask for more, but to credibly leave if not given it. As the author puts it, people with this condition start "behaving like a beat down puppy with the only employer they've ever known."This could be a sign of the times. Decades ago, it was not only normal to stay at one company for extremely long stretches of time, it was expected. We can still see traces of that work culture in places like Japan . But today, in the U.S. at least, the new reality is job hopping , where staying at one place for longer than a few years is unusual and even a little strange, especially among young people. Or is it? Fivethirtyeight says that young people aren't changing jobs that much more than previous generations, and notes that people in their 20s have always changed jobs before settling in somewhere more long term.Whether or not it's true that young people change jobs more often, if truly someone is displaying signs of "first job syndrome" (and, honestly, it need not be strictly the first. Such dynamics can easily play out with a second or even third), it may be time to reevaluate certain things, perhaps concluding with one of those infamous job hops.
