'" The word "Pinkfong" doesn't mean anything, specifically — one of the founders thought that "fong" was a fun word because it sounded like "phone" — but now it refers to the company and its mascot, the bright pink fox you see before all their videos.

By now, even if you don't have kids in the "Baby Shark" fan demographic, you've likely caught a hint of it out in the world, and can recognize the tune and the "doo doo doo doo doodoos" that follow it. After all, the original "Baby Shark" video has been viewed more than 2.2 billion times on YouTube, which has led to a spot on the Billboard Top 100, celebrity renditions, parodies, meme challenges, and co-workers who sing it out loud in the office even though the main reason you come to work is to get away from the toddler who sings it at home all the time. (Ahem.) And, as soon as you hear it, it's over — it'll be stuck in your head forever. But, if you've somehow managed to escape all that — or you've heard your toddler sing it on a loop and want to know what the heck she's talking about — it's time to catch up with the phenomenon, because it isn't going away.

The "Baby Shark" craze started with this video.

There are other "Baby Shark" videos, including a seasonal one and ones that don't include the dance moves, but this is the version that first hit it big on YouTube. It's easy to understand why it caught on: The lyrics are repetitive and earwormy, and the motions are easy for toddlers to do. The video isn't recent: It dates back to November 2015, uploaded by a Korean education company called Pinkfong. While it was pretty successful from the start, the video went really viral in Asia in August 2017, Forbes reports, when people began posting videos of themselves doing the dance moves and hashtagging it #babysharkchallenge.

Pinkfong and its parent company, SmartStudy, were founded in South Korea in 2010 by three former game developers who wanted to move into education. They didn't orchestrate the #babysharkchallenge hashtag — it happened organically. “We had no idea how sensational the shark family was going to get,” co-founder Ryan Seungkyu told a Korean newspaper. “The situation is similar to the success of Psy and 'Gangnam Style.'" The word "Pinkfong" doesn't mean anything, specifically — one of the founders thought that "fong" was a fun word because it sounded like "phone" — but now it refers to the company and its mascot, the bright pink fox you see before all their videos. According to company lore, the fox is "an adorable prince from planet Staria," a detail inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince.

The song's roots go way back.

As for who wrote the "Baby Shark" song, Pinkfong says that the tune is loosely based on lots of traditional songs for kids, including the French children’s song “Bébé Requin" and "Kleiner Hai" from Germany. (There's also an American children's musician, Johnny Only, who is suing Pinkfong for copyright infringement, saying the version of the song that went viral for them is one that he came up with first.) The opening chords — the part that sounds like the Jaws theme — is actually picked up from Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9. This content is imported from youTube. In addition to new videos, which are continuously uploaded to their YouTube channel, the company has leapt off the screen and launched a line of dolls, books, t-shirts, and even phone accessories. But the biggest news is that it's been announced that Pinkfong will launch a new TV series this year. Official details are scarce, but Bloomberg got the scoop: "Seoul-based SmartStudy Co.'s Pinkfong is planning to release short videos via Netflix Inc., a cartoon series and a musical in North America this year, one of the company’s founders said in an interview this week. The startup, which has recently signed various merchandising deals, may also develop games that work with Amazon.com Inc.’s Alexa and Alphabet Inc.’s Google Home voice assistants." So, get ready: Pinkfong will soon be available in every inch of your house. There's no use fighting it, so you might as well learn the moves.
