As per the Indian numbering system, one lakh is a unit which is equal to 100,000 (one hundred thousand) in the international unit system. 10 lakh in Indian currency makes a million in International currency. 'Million' is the term used in the international numbering system, whereas 'lakh' is the equivalent term used in the Indian numbering system. From the below list of unit divisions in both the numbering systems, you can see the difference. An amount of one lakh in the Indian numbering system is equivalent to one hundred thousand in the international numbering system -- a comma divides every two digits instead of every three digits.

As per the Indian currency system:

1-Ones

10-Tens

100-Hundred

1000-Thousand

10,000-Ten thousand

1,00,000-One Lakh

10,00,000-Ten

1,00,00,000-One

10,00,00,000-Ten

As per the international currency system:

1-Ones

10-Tens

100-Hundred

1000-Thousand

10,000-Ten thousand

100,000-Hundred thousand

1,000,000-Million

10,000,000-Ten Million

100,000,000-Hundred million

1,000,000,000-Billion

10,000,000,000-Ten Billion

Here is a simple formula to remember the difference between lakh and million. Have a look: 1 Lakh = 100 Thousands = 1 followed by 5 Zeros = 100,000 10 Lakhs = 1 Million = 1 followed by 6 Zeros = 1,000,000 Similarly here, 1 Crore = 10 Million = 1 followed by 7 Zeros = 10,000,000 In other words, it can be said as one thousand is multiplied by one thousand, it makes one million.

How? 1 million: 1,000 * 1,000= 10 Lakh

So the answer to this question is: 10 lakh in an Indian currency a million in an International currency.
