And if you’re on the hunt for a remote, entry-level job this year, you’re in luck! According to a report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), employers plan to hire 32% more new college graduates from the Class of 2022 than they hired from the Class of 2021. Even if you’re not a new college graduate, there’s never been a better time to look for a new job. A recent FlexJobs survey found that more than half of active job seekers (57%) are looking for work in a different career field, which, for many, means an entry-level job. Given the uptick in hiring and job searching, FlexJobs took a deep dive into its database to help job seekers better understand what remote, entry-level job opportunities are out there.

As more companies embrace workplace flexibility, remote work options are becoming more accessible at all career levels and in more industries. To help new grads better assess their options, we analyzed the more than 50 career categories in our database. We specifically looked at entry-level, remote job postings and identified the top 10 career categories with the most postings between January 1, 2022, and April 30, 2022. We also identified the top 10 entry-level remote job titles and the top 15 companies that posted remote, entry-level jobs!

How to Find a Remote, Entry-Level Job

While searching for an entry-level job is no different than searching for any other job, here are some tips to help you find and land one!

— Make Job Searching a Job

Searching for a job takes a lot of time and energy, just like a job, so treat it like one! Make your job search a job and give it the attention it deserves. Start with a job search plan. Set aside a block of time every day to devote to your job search and focus on just that. Outline what you need to do, when you need to do it, and how you’ll hold yourself accountable. Use a to-do list or job search journal to keep yourself organized and on track.

While this seems like a lot of extra effort, it can pay off in the long run. For example, you’ll be able to see what’s working and what isn’t. And you’ll know exactly when you need to follow up on your application or with the hiring manager. And finally, because a job search takes time, planning and tracking everything gives you a record of your accomplishments. On those days when you feel like you might never get a job, look over how far you’ve come and take pride in all you’ve done.

— Customize Your Resume and Cover Letter

While it may seem efficient (and easier) to write one cover letter, then swap out the company’s name and the role you’re applying for when you apply, in the end, you may not save yourself any time at all. Many companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen resumes and cover letters long before a human sees them. These bots look for things like keywords and other “matches” to help determine who is the most qualified for the role. To help your application rank, take the time to customize your resume and cover letter each and every time you apply for a role. Use keywords from the job description in your application to help show that you and the employer speak the same language and demonstrate how you’re a good fit for the company’s culture. Instead of listing off your tasks and duties, explain what you accomplished in the role and how it benefited your employer. And if you don’t have any “real” job experience, that’s OK. You can talk about what you accomplished in a volunteer role or even in an extracurricular activity.

— Build a Network and Use It

It’s never too early to start growing a professional network. You’ll find it’s the most valuable tool in this and all your future job searches! While online networking (like on LinkedIn) is the most common way to connect these days, don’t discount using in-person events either. Sometimes that face-to-face connection can make a difference. As you build your network, you’ll connect with people in the industry or roles you’re targeting. Tap into their knowledge through an informational interview. This isn’t about finding out about an open role as much as it is learning about how to get the job you want. Ask this person if they have 20 or 30 minutes to talk with you so you can learn more about their job, the industry, and the company they work for. Understanding how they got to where they are can help you figure out what you need to do to get where you want to go.
