World Humanitarian Day pays respect to those working to help improve the lives of others in dyer conditions. VHR are helping raise awareness of Unethical Recruitment – a practice that can have legal consequences and damage the lives of everyone involved.

How To Spot An Unethical Recruiter:

1. Paying for Recruitment Services

A candidate should never be asked to pay for recruitment services, despite the reputation of the agency or profiles of the job opportunities available. For instance, clients recognise that the best candidates are a valuable commodity and would not approve of charging them to apply.

2. False Job Descriptions

The job is real and the order does exist, however unethical recruiters will attempt to make the position look more inviting to candidates by editing the description with deceptive changes. The most obvious of changes are to increase the salary and other benefits: including holiday days, sick pay, location, travel perks and compensations.

3. Discrimination in Hiring

Discrimination means treating a person unfairly because of who they are or because they possess certain characteristics; this covers the basis of race, sex, gender or religion. If a recruiter discriminates against a candidate, they are behaving in an unethical manner. Despite claims of bias in hiring harming the reputation of a business, leading to the potential for lost business and revenue, unethical recruiters will use such tactics based on their own personal preference.

Ensure you choose the right recruiter for you.

4. Altering CV’s

Similar to altering the job descriptions, editing a candidate’s CV to suit a job’s requirements is equally unethical. An unethical recruiter that edits a CV on open formats will have the sole objective of getting candidates through the front door of a client’s business.

5. Fake Jobs

An unethical recruiter will lure a candidate in to a job opportunity by practicing the following steps:

1. Creating a fake job description

3. Offering the candidates amazing life time opportunities to match their skill-sets and aspirations

4. Claiming they’ve submitted their CV to the client

5. Following-up with the candidate a week or two later to inform them that they’ve spoken to the client

6. Revealing that unfortunately the position has gone to someone internally

By doing this, the candidate will never know that the job opportunity wasn’t in fact real, they are instead led under the impression that it was taken by someone else; this is completely unethical and a violation of data.
