Remember, when comparing different insulation types, it helps to understand a bit more about what these values mean so you can judge how much better one type of insulation performs over another.

What K-Values Mean

K-values measure conductivity. Good conductors have higher K-values, and poor conductors have lower K-values. When insulation is your concern, you want a low K-value. In terms of insulation for industrial and mechanical purposes, K-values are important because they tell you how well the material insulates when it has a thickness of 1 inch. If you know the K-value, you can determine the appropriate thickness you need for your insulation.

Here’s a more specific explanation of how K-values are calculated:

The formula is BTUs per hour conducted through a 1-inch-thick, 1-square-foot piece of the material. In practice, this means a low K-value material lets less heat pass through it. In that sense, it tells you quite a bit about how well the material insulates. Note: Thickness does not affect K-value. The measurement tells you about the performance of the material, not the actual product you might purchase. If two kinds of insulation have the same K-value, they’re equally good conductors—but the thicker one will insulate better.

What R-Values Mean

R-values measure insulation. Higher R-values indicate that a material insulates better.

At home, your windows and fiberglass insulation carry an R-value rating to indicate how well they keep out exterior temperatures and keep in heating and air conditioning. For industrial and mechanical insulation, you may also see these same R-values used. The important thing to know is that insulation R-values indicate the “thermal resistance” of the material—how well the product prevents heat energy from passing back and forth. Note: Thickness affects R-values. For example, you can look at a certain kind of fiberglass insulation product. The 1-inch-thick product will have a certain R-value, and the 2-inch-thick version of the same product will have twice the R-value. When you have multiple layers—such as fiberglass insulation covered by a PVC jacket—you can add up the R-values of each layer to determine a total R-value for the whole system. For many practical purposes, you can find out a minimum K-value or R-value, or an optimal range to buy.
