What is Rule 1?

Rule 1 is an unwritten rule that no one, including professional players, should ever break unless you want your teammates to throw the game. Rule 1 works like this: when you are in a headlock with another player, you should never break that lock.

Rocket League is a fun game featuring a hybrid of football and vehicular mayhem. You’re trying to score goals while performing acrobatic aerial manoeuvres, all while defending your own goalpost. It’s a wacky game that requires a lot of skill. One particular element that exists in the world of Rocket League is the fundamental rule known as Rule 1. Rule 1 is an unwritten rule that no one, including professional players, should ever break unless you want your teammates to throw the game. Rule 1 works like this: when you are in a headlock with another player, you should never break that lock. A "lock" occurs when two players drive at one other, causing the two cars to become trapped or locked together. While there is no formal rule on the subject, the community follows this unwritten rule, and in some situations, teams will score own goals if a teammate breaks a lock.

So, let’s see a few examples of Rule 1 in action.

As seen above, Rule 1 happens when the two cars “lock” head to head, and even though they are playing in a professional setting, they are to not break the lock.

Check out another example of Rule 1.

Origins of Rule 1

For many players, the OG Rule 1 is to not let the ball strike the ground when the clock strikes 0:00. These are known as Zeroseconders. Such instances can still be found today, but most of them have given up the term and it is known as Rule 2. Rule 1 spawned many interesting variations such as Back-to-Back Locking, Front-to-Back Locking, or affectionately known as butt-kissing, Side-by-Side Locking aka Rule 1a, or the rarest of them all, Group Locking. All of these “rules” are definitely unwritten, and many of them generate heated discussions in most Rocket League forums. But what’s apparent is that these rules definitely add to the fun and the intensity of the game.

How Do You Break Rule 1?

You don’t.

Rule 1 can only be broken naturally such as by gravity, and in certain regions, teammates may help break Rule 1 by ramming into you, so it’s generally unacceptable for teammates to help break Rule 1.

What Happens If I Break Rule 1?

Well, it depends.

Breaking Rule 1 intentionally is a disrespectful move and may result in teammates throwing the game, or an opponent scoring an easy goal. It’s karma in action, and you’d be surprised how many times this would happen after breaking Rule 1.

Does Rule 1 Apply If You Locked A Teammate?

The answer will be determined by the teammates. If your teammate continues to press the gas pedal, it might mean they want to implement Rule 1. Applying Rule 1 to your teammates in a two-vs-two battle may be counterproductive because your opponents will be able to score easily.

Never Break Rule 1

At the end of the day, Rule 1 is an unwritten rule. However, many players abide by this rule and it’s safe to assume that if you’re hopping into Rocket League, be prepared to follow this rule, unless you want a healthy dose of instant karma in your match. Anyhow, despite conceding goals due to Rule 1, remember that Rocket League is just a game, and goals are only a part of the game.

It used to be that making new pals was as easy as recess in the schoolyard. Adulthood, however, poses its own obstacles to finding your ride or die—the least of which are crammed schedules, parental duties, and not wanting to leave your comfort zone, especially if you're an introvert. If you've moved to a new town or city, making connections with others in your new locale is an important part of helping you settle down and thrive in your new life. Many of us forge lasting friendships through our jobs, but with so many companies offering full time work-from-home options, this is another strong buddy-building avenue at risk. These platonic relationships can be so vital. Just as dating apps have helped to solve the dilemma of finding love in the digital age, apps to make friends are working to fill another void. For those looking for a new workout buddy or kindly neighbor to get coffee with on the weekends, try Bumble BFF. Dog lovers can find companions on Pawdates. Avid readers can get an online book club started with like-minded people around the world using Skout. Or, take a quick survey on the app Friender to help match you with a potential new BFF. Options abound, so read on for the best friendship apps that can both help you expand your network and find the Gayle to your Oprah (or vice versa). Bonus: Most of them are free.
