The term “social media” refers to the means by which individuals connect in virtual communities and networks by creating, sharing, and/or exchanging information and ideas.

So, What Exactly Is Social Media?

Rather than utilizing a bunch of dull jargon to define the phrase, breaking it down into simpler terms may be the best approach to gain a better understanding of it. Let’s start by looking at each word separately. The ’social’ component refers to engaging with other individuals by sharing and receiving information from them. The term ’media’ refers to a means of communication, such as the internet (while TV, radio, and newspapers are examples of more traditional forms of media).

We can piece together a rudimentary definition from these two terms:

Social media are web-based communication platforms that allow people to share and consume information with one another. Yes, it’s a broad definition—but remember, social media is a broad term. Without focusing too heavily on a more specialized subsection of social media, this is probably as specific as we can get.

Key Principles for Social Media Managers:

Social media is about conversations, community, connecting with the audience, and building relationships. It is not just a broadcast channel or a sales and marketing tool.

Authenticity, honesty, and open dialogue are key.

Social media not only allows you to hear what people say about you but enables you to respond. Listen first, speak second. Be compelling, useful, relevant, and engaging. Don’t be afraid to try new things, but think through your efforts before kicking them off. The difficulty is that there are so many social platforms on the internet today that it can be difficult to tell them apart. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of the most popular social media platforms so you can learn about their purpose and the role they can play in building your online profile.

1- LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a professional networking site for people who want to advance in their careers. Users establish their profiles in the same way they do on Facebook, by providing information like their work experience, career ambitions, skill set, and so on. In a nutshell, it’s a website where you may post your CV and network with other professionals in your field. LinkedIn is all about networking, as previously said. You “connect” with other people instead of sending “friend requests.” LinkedIn feeds often contain educational materials, job postings, and anything else related to professional development or industry trends.

You can, however, dedicate a tiny percentage of your advertising budget to the Facebook ads manager in order to get your name out there. Instagram is a photo and video-sharing platform where you can establish your own account and follow other users’ photographs and videos to have them appear in your Instagram feed. On the platform, users can like, comment, and share photographs and videos. Instagram is perfect for reaching consumers under the age of 35 because of its young user base. It’s a social media platform with a strong visual component that encourages authenticity and creativity. Influencer marketing, a developing marketing trend, was born as a result. Instagram is a Facebook subsidiary as well. Any Instagram advertising you create and administer will be done through Facebook ads management. Twitter is a social media platform that allows users to connect with one another through tweets. Tweets are short communications that a person can put out and have their followers see or find using hashtags.
