Podcasts continue to attract new listeners here in the UK and around the world and recent research shows that they are the fastest growing media format. The Guardian, one the pioneers of podcasting in the UK looked at the effectiveness of podcast advertising, but the findings reveal interesting stats for podcasters whether or not they include ads in their shows. Among the findings are that 41% of respondents said they are listening to more podcasts now than they were a year earlier. That’s a bigger increase than for social media (38%), online videos including YouTube (37%), watching TV (31%), or listening to commercial radio (26%). Although the other formats mentioned are already at a maturity stage that means growth may be expected to be slower than podcasting, the increase in listening for podcasts as a standalone stat, is impressive.

No longer niche

With podcast listening already at around 15 million in the UK alone in 2022, the continued projected growth is exciting. e-Marketer projects podcast listening to reach more than 16 million in 2023 and almost 17 million by 2024.

But it’s not just listener numbers that are important when considering podcasting.

The Guardian study, conducted in January by independent researchers Tapesty, also confirmed previous research that shows the engagement that podcast listeners have compared to other media. It found 65% of listeners paid attention to podcast adverts – more than adverts on TV at 39% and adverts on the radio at 38%. Those saying “it tells me something new about the brand” increases by 34% when podcasts are added alongside a radio campaign and they also help dial-up the ‘brand’ part of branded content – 47% of those exposed to branded content said “it improves my opinion of the brand”. but when podcast adverts are added to the mix, that figure jumps to 64%. Combined with the visual cues of digital display, podcasts make campaigns more memorable and trustworthy. Trust levels increase from 45% to 63% when podcasts are added into the media mix.
