A common business hierarchy includes coordinator, manager and director positions. The difference among them includes the type of work done by each person and the autonomy they have to do their job. Understanding the different skill sets needed for each position will help you prepare to move to the next level as you progress in your career.

Skill Sets

Skill sets are the combinations of experience, training, knowledge and abilities you have that are apropos to a particular business function. Examples of hard skills include a degree or certification, software knowledge, hands-on product or service knowledge or experience performing a task. Soft skills include leadership, problem-solving, creativity and learning curving. Knowledge of a language or particular culture, gender or other group characteristic is another skill a business person can use in a job. A grouping of skills that helps you handle a particular job is a skill set.

Role of Coordinator

Being a coordinator is often the first step toward management in many companies. Coordinators are given specific projects, usually with exact instructions on how the task is to be completed. A coordinator generally acts as a manager’s assistant, helping the manager when she has too much work and needs to hand off a simple project. A coordinator often is required to come to his manager when he has a question, rather than making an executive decision if he is not sure. The skill set for a coordinator vs. manager includes an ability to take and understand direction, good communications to keep projects on track, reliability, the ability to follow directions and meet deadlines, and a willingness to ask questions and learn, according to Indeed.

Role of Manager

One of the major differences between coordinator and manager is a manager has a bit more decision-making authority when given a task, based on the fact that she has performed the task before, usually as a coordinator. A manager will be given specific goals, but not necessarily exact instructions on how the task is to be completed. The manager might be given a budget and deadline, but will have some autonomy as to how to spend the money and get the job done. Managers often oversee other workers. In smaller companies, the title coordinator is often given to managers.

Role of Director

Directors are executives who have extensive experience in their areas and are expected to come up with ideas, projects and solutions that meet a business’s goals. For example, a director of marketing of a men’s and women’s footwear company might decide to add a line of children’s shoes to the company’s product mix. Directors set budgets, project sales and revenues, and work with managers to achieve big-picture goals, according to Job Hero. Directors’ skills include expert industry or professional knowledge, hands-on product or service experience, leadership, some financial management and personnel experience, and an intimate knowledge of the company’s goals and strategies.

Project Totem Pole

An example of the director-manager-coordinator roles would be their work on an advertising campaign. The advertising director would create the theme for a campaign and create the major elements of an ad, choose the media in which the ad will run and set the budget.
