Familiar with the name Brandon Stanton?

Brandon didn’t start his career as a photographer. He was once a bonds trader. As you can imagine, Brandon realized that while financially rewarding, bonds trading left much to be desired in terms of emotional or creative fulfillment. In 2010, Brandon lost his job and decided to finally do what he always wanted: photography.

He had no professional training either!

People change careers successfully all the time. You can do it too. Sometimes, however, we aren’t quite sure which path to take. Which career will allow us to keep our financial success while feeling rewarded at the end of each day?

With the right strategy and mindset, anything is possible. I hope these tips on how to change careers help you find your path.

How to Change Careers at ANY Age: 5 Tips

Feeling an overwhelming sense of dread before heading back to work tomorrow? Normal! 81% of people across all professions report feeling anxiety on Sunday nights. So, what is life like for that 19% of workers who don’t suffer from the “Sunday Scaries?” Well, we can’t be sure, but we can guess. They might work in rewarding jobs, have more control over their schedule, and work in a culture where they have more autonomy. Consider what you want out of your 40 hours each week as you strategize how to change careers.

1. Take a Personality Test or Career Change Test

You might think you know yourself pretty dang well. After all, you spend more time with yourself than anyone else, right?

Well, sometimes we have a tough time putting our best (and not-so-great) qualities into perspective. Of course, no personality test or career change quiz can dictate your path, but they CAN offer some awesome insight. My free Career Change Quiz can help jumpstart your brainstorming.

2. Make a List of What You Love at Your Current Job

Look, no job is perfect.

That’s the reality. Would you settle for 90% perfect, though? That’d be awesome, right?

Draw a thick horizontal line on a piece of paper – this is your career line. On the left, it’s 0% perfect; on the right, it’s 100% perfect. Where do you stand now? Mark it with a bold black X.

(Let me guess: 25% perfect? 35% at best?)

Find and mark your ideal place on the line where the life is full of sweet strawberries instead of sour lemons (unless you like lemons). You high achievers probably won’t shoot for anything less than 90%, right?

Now, look at the two marks and the gap in between them. What will move the needle from A to B? What’s lacking at your job you’d love to have: fulfillment, recognition, challenge, responsibilities, creativity, fun, flexibility, freedom?

List your values. These are things you treasure. Think about which three values would drive your career satisfaction to 90% at least! (As a perfectionist, I know you won’t settle for less.)

3. Do Some Job Reconnaissance

Time for some detective work! This part is fun.

Start by making a broad list of careers that interest you. Your list might include unusual positions in your current industry or new fields entirely. You might have heard about vision boards, but I prefer idea books where I illustrate my favorite writers, coaches, online yoga teachers, interior designers, researchers, comedians, and everyone else who inspires me. I use points of interest from my favorite professionals to inspire my growth in all aspects: growth, humor, writing, flexibility, etc.

Now it’s time for the research:

Browse job descriptions: Which jobs give you goosebumps? Spark joy? Flashes of excitement? What screams out, “this was made for YOU”? Don’t overthink things here. Just browse and check how you feel. Go back to basics: What did you have your heart set on before your parents and society convinced you it wouldn’t result in a lucrative job? Did you want to be an artist or writer? Did you want to dance but the boys made fun of you? Look inside the attic of your heart before expanding your search. Start a career exploration journal: Grab a nice notebook and write down everything that inspires you: Comments you overhear while grabbing your latte, success stories in the news, people you meet on the street. If something sparks emotions, write that down! Continue this for up to six weeks. Talk to people in the position: LinkedIn is great because you can talk to people who work in the field. Ask open-ended questions about their likes and dislikes at their specific job and company. Plus, you can start building a professional network! Take free or low-cost courses: Coursera and Udemy make it easy to explore different fields with minimal risk. Even if you discover something isn’t the best fit, learning is NEVER a bad investment! Once you figure out the right choice, you could open yourself up to advancing a degree from a prestigious university. Attend industry events or webinars: Like low-cost courses, events (both online and off) and webinars make it easy to explore the nitty-gritty across different industries in a low-risk environment. As a bonus, you can network with folks at different companies.

4. Experiment

Before burning your bridges, try your hand at all the roles you’ve selected.

What is the smallest possible step you can take to ensure you’re making the right choice before you jump? How can you be sure this new endeavor will make you jump out of bed with joy Monday mornings?

Dreaming and analysis can only get you so far. Listening to professional podcasts and taking courses isn’t enough. We only see the good parts – what people want us to see – online.

Is there a risk-free way to experiment in these new shoes?

Such as:

Job shadowing at your dream company

Volunteering at an animal shelter

Selling your hand-made crafts to neighbors

Posting your photography for free on Unsplash

Offering free musical lessons to kids

5. Talk to a Career Strategist

Sometimes we need to get outside our heads with a third-party perspective – especially when that third-party is trained to help you learn how to change careers! Career coaches don’t hold your hand and tell you exactly what to do. The best ones help you organize your thoughts, discover your talents, and strategize a concrete plan of action. Plus, it’s nice to have someone outside your family, holding you accountable to your own goals!
