Your Video Went Viral… Now What?

Picture this: you spent hours filming and editing a new video like you do each week. You are happy with your latest video. The topic is a bit different from what you normally do, but you know it will be useful for your subscribers.

You post the video.

A few hours pass and your subscribers like it and comment as usual. But this time they are very enthusiastic ‘this is so helpful!”, “I can relate to this so much!’, your followers really seem to be loving the video. Then, a few days pass and you log back on to your account. Your video suddenly has hundreds of thousands of views. Your comments are nearly 700 strong and you’ve never seen so many likes on one of your videos before. And the best part? Your subscriber number seems to be growing at the fastest rate it has ever grown.

It’s official. You’ve gone viral.

You know that this is a critical moment in your career as a YouTuber. A moment many YouTubers never, ever get to experience. So what comes next? How can you keep these new fans engaged?

What many people don’t mention is this: as hard as it is to get a video to go viral, it is even harder to maintain the momentum of your viral video after the fact. Unfortunately, one viral video does not equal a long, successful YouTube career. In fact, the vast majority of viral videos are one-offs. However, this doesn’t have to be the case for you. With a little strategy you can keep the momentum going on your channel, and maybe end up with another viral video under your belt. Here’s how:

Expect drop off

When it comes to the calm after a viral video storm, hope for the best but expect the worst. There will be a drop off in engagement after the initial fire storm of your videos wears off. That is fine. Expect that there will be some people who will only watch that one video and maybe won’t watch any of your other content. Don’t take that personally. Focus on growing, but don’t try to please everyone.

Try to find out why your video went viral

In the days following your video going viral, you should try very hard to understand why that certain video went viral. If you did a video that is different from your other videos, that should be fairly easy to find out. But if your viral video is similar to other videos on your channel, cracking the code as to why that video in particular was successful may be trickier. But try to figure out what was different about that video. It will help you tremendously.

Replicate the success

Once you have figured out what made your video go viral, do more of that content. In fact, the worst thing you could do is to go back to business as usual on your channel. Let’s say you have a makeup channel and a hair video is what made your channel go viral. Guess what? You now have a hair channel. Do more hair videos, do not go back to posting makeup videos. The momentum you got when your video went viral will come to a screeching halt if you don’t do more of the content that made you go viral in the first place.

Take your engagement into overdrive

Respond to every new person who comments on your channel. Ask them what they would like to see more of. Welcome them and make sure you don’t overlook anyone who showing you love. New people will like feeling welcomed to your channel. So make sure you do your best to address every commenter.

Expect haters, but don’t let them get you down

Naysayers are normal when a video goes viral. Some people simply can’t resist being a negative Nancy. Ignore haters. Do not engage with them. Besides, for every one hater you’ll likely have dozens of lovers. Set the stage early. Make sure everyone knows that you don’t tolerate negativity on your channel by ignoring hater comments so they are pushed to the bottom of your comments section and forgotten.
