If you create a new post and type a caption that could be deemed abusive, such as tagging someone and saying 'You're stupid', then a little box will flag up that warns, 'This caption looks similar to others that have been reported'.

Read More »One of the other things the company has been working on is dealing with bullying on the platform. Earlier this year, Instagram introduced AI that would notify people when their comments would be considered offensive or abusive before they posted it, in order to give them a chance to rectify it. The feedback for this feature has been so positive so far that the company has launched an extension of the AI to flag potentially bullying language in the caption of a photo or video on the feed. The platform says the feature, Caption Warning, will offer people another opportunity to reflect on their words before posting, presumably with the aim to stop them from sharing them as a result. If you create a new post and type a caption that could be deemed abusive, such as tagging someone and saying ‘You’re stupid’, then a little box will flag up that warns, ‘This caption looks similar to others that have been reported’. There is then a few options for the user, including editing the caption, learn more about why the language is harmful, or sharing the post anyway. Instagram isn’t the only social media platform that uses this kind of tech to prevent abusive comments on the platform. Peanut, the social network for mums and mums-to-be, uses a similar tool, as does the neighbourhood social app Nextdoor. CEO Sarah Friar calls this a “kindness reminder”, saying that in behavioural science it demonstrates that it slows people down, makes them read what they’ve said again, and makes them feel they are being observed which can cause them to act better. It’s particularly important that Instagram tackles the issues of cyberbulling, especially when it comes to children and young people. According to data by Childline, in 2018/19, 14 per cent of the helpline’s counselling sessions were specifically about online bullying. The charity said that the networks most commonly named in sessions were Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat – with Instagram mentions more than doubling since 2017/18. The platform is now working with the anti-bullying charity Cybersmile, a non-profit dedicated to tackling digital abuse and bullying online, as part of its commitment to tackling bullying online. Other features that aim to prevent bullying on Instagram include the comment filter, which means you can block seeing particular words, phrases or emoji which may upset you, as well as the restrict feature which means someone can still comment on your posts but you won’t be able to see it.
