It’s the most annoying word of the year time. Once again Marist Poll conducted its annual survey of American adults to find out what the most annoying word of the year was for 2021. If you’re shaking your head and thinking “Literally, whatever dude” then you’ve nailed it in terms of poll results. “Whatever” came in first with 38-percent of respondents finding it to be the most annoying word. Oddly “whatever” has been at the top of the American’s most annoying word list for about a decade. And yet it persistently prevails is usage. Some blame the movie “Clueless” for the popularization of this irritating word, the verbal equivalent of a dismissive eyeroll. “No offense, but” came in second with 20 percent of Americans finding it irksome. “You know, right” and “I can’t even” tied for grating at 14 percent each. “Huge” grates on the nerves of 8 percent of Americans.
