It's little disingenuous, and you won't be able to use it again and again without annoying the person with who you are chatting, but there is a way to find out whether your messages are reaching the person or not. And this way is through the voice message. WhatsApp launched the Read Receipt feature in 2014. It basically informs the users that their message has been read by the recipient. Since nobody today wants the other party to have an idea that he or she is available 24x7 on the chat app, many people have their Read Receipts turned off. The feature is present under the Privacy option and works for texts and videos. Sadly, it fails to support the voice clips. Yes, no matter how much you want to hide from those annoying voice clips from an aspiring singer in your distant family or friends, WhatsApp on its blog clearly states that the blue ticks are not compatible with voice clips. This is what the chat app mentions on its blog: "Note: This won't disable the read receipts for group chats or play receipts for voice messages. There's no way to turn these settings off." What this means in simple words is that if you want to find if someone is online or not, and if that someone is reading your messages or not, all you have to do is send a short -- 1 second will do -- voice message. This also means that if you want a confirmation that your message has been read, or in this case listened, you should send a voice message.

So for example, if you are managing a team and want to people to come early on Monday morning, send them a voice message telling them so. As soon as they hear it, the message will get the Blue Ticks, confirming that they have got the message and have listened to it. No more defence that "I didn't see the message because it was Sunday".

But as noted earlier, this is not a great way to find out whether a person is ignoring you deliberately or if it is just that he or she is too busy. Sending a voice message to find out if your messages are being read or not is akin to stalking and it may backfire. At its best these voice messages would be a nuisance, at worst they can create a major trust problem between you and the person to who you have sent the message. As for the people who have turned off the Read Receipts, you should be vary of voice messages. If you don't want to broadcast whether you have read the message or not, ignore the message. WhatsApp read receipt does not work for audio clips but the ticks appear only when you have heard the audio clip. Do not play the message and simply delete it. This will not send any blue ticks on the other side and you can have a peaceful Sunday.
