Will it provide the income you need?

Is there room to grow with the job?

Your social media accounts aren’t professional

If you are applying for a work at home job or trying to launch a home-based business, the way you present yourself on social media is so important. Companies and customers are going to be checking out your accounts, whether you use them for business or not, to make sure you are someone they want to do business with. Do a quick audit of your accounts and make sure everything on their portrays the image that you want. If there’s anything you are on the fence about, delete it. Make sure your social media accounts make you look mature, responsible, and employable. First impressions are everything. Be sure your accounts are highlighting your strengths, even if you aren’t posting anything about your work at home job hunt. If you are a writer, make sure your posts show that you can write coherently without any grammar or spelling mistakes. If you are a marketer, make sure you are marketing yourself with every post that you make? Whatever your field, use your social media accounts to your benefit instead of having them work against you.

You aren’t thinking outside the box

Being a work at home mom requires a little creativity — there’s no getting around that. No matter what you want to do, you’ll have to function a bit differently than you would if you were working in an office setting. Many jobs can be transitioned to a work at home job if you are a bit creative. I knew of one mom who worked in corporate sales and wanted to work from home. Her boss was concerned that she wouldn’t be connected to the team unless she was in the office. She researched options and pitched a free video conferencing program to her boss that would let her stay connected to her team, no matter where she was working from, and was able to transition her job into a work at home career. If you are willing to start your own business, the options for work at home jobs are endless, but it does require some definitely “outside the box” thinking. Think about the things that you are good at or enjoy doing. Decide how you can monetize and scale it and you have a work at home job that will likely pay more than your old career did. Get creative. Look at the big picture. You may be surprised at what you can come up with.

Far too many job searches come from a place of desperation. That doesn’t help you sell yourself. If you are currently employed and want to work from home, don’t focus on your needs when pitching your desire to work from home to your boss. Focus on how you working from home would benefit the company. While we like to think that most boss’s have your best interest at heart, the reality is, they have to look for options that help the company succeed. If you worked from home would you be able to be more productive because you didn’t have the distractions of the office? Could cutting out your commuting time allow you more time to catch up on products? Look for ways you working from home will benefit your job performance. This same principle applies to home businesses. If you work in sales or are trying to find clients, you have to be able to pitch yourself well. Focus on your successes and share those. Emphasize the positive rather than the negative. This sounds so obvious but I can’t tell you how many moms I’ve seen try and start a direct sales business that come to me practically begging me to buy their product because they need to earn money. While I’m always happy to support a friend, I’m more excited about buying something that someone comes to me and tell me how amazing it is and shares the positive impact it has had on their life rather than begging me to purchase because they need to pay their power bill.

You aren’t networking

You may have been able to get away without doing much networking when you found your last job but when looking for a work at home job, networking is essential. Most work at home jobs never get posted in standard job search engines and the ones that do get listed publicly are filled fast. Make sure your family, friends, and professional network knows you are looking for a work at home job. Attend local events to meet people who may be hiring. Join professional groups on Facebook or LinkedIn. Connect with your old contacts and see if they have heard of any job openings. Not every work at home job is advertised as a home-based job. If you find a job that you are a great fit for, you can pitch it as a work at home job once you get in the door and start interviewing. They may move on to another candidate or they may be so sold on you that they are open to the job being home-based. Are you a work-at-home mom who need some support? Maybe you want to work from home but aren’t sure where to start. Either way, our Busy Work at Home Moms Facebook group is for you.
